The British-American software pioneer John McAfee was found dead in his cell in Barcelona in June 2021. Spanish media had already reported it as a suicide, and that has now been confirmed. A court in Barcelona conducted an investigation into McAfee's death. On July 24, it stated that McAfee had taken his own life, but this was only made public last Friday. McAfee was found dead in his cell on June 23, 2021. Not long before, the court had decided to extradite him to the United States on charges of tax evasion. If found guilty, he could have faced a five-year prison sentence. In 2021, an autopsy had already determined that McAfee had committed suicide. His widow demanded further investigation, as she believed the software pioneer was not suicidal. The judge stated in a final decision that "there are no indications of anything else." There is no possibility of appeal against the judge's ruling. McAfee's body has been in a Spanish mortuary since his death. According to the Spanish newspaper El País, his relatives have three options. They can conduct a new private autopsy or have the body cremated in Barcelona. The last option is to initiate a lengthy (and costly) procedure to transport the body to the United States. | |
