Hacker group Money Message claims to have taken 1.5 TB of source code and databases hostage, demanding $ 4 million. Among other things, the code would include the framework on which MSI's bios runs, and the keys to sign a new bios update. The group could distribute its own BIOS software with malware, which would appear as "real" as MSI's own updates. MSI reports that the affected systems are working normally again, and that the attack has been reported to government agencies. The manufacturer urges users to download BIOS updates only from the official MSI website. The attack is said to have caused” no significant financial impact", which sounds like no ransom was paid. Whether that means we'll all be able to write our own bios for MSI motherboards remains to be seen. |
