In Ukraine, live traffic information is temporarily not visible on Google Maps. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, told Reuters that it had taken measures to protect the civilian population. Normally, Google Maps show how busy different places like shopping centers or restaurants are. But after consulting with local authorities, that feature is now disabled. More information on this has not been released. Google has not disabled all features. For example, motorists can still use the navigation function. A lot of information can be read from Google Maps. For example, a professor at the California Middlebury Institute of International Studies recently wrote on Twitter that the map showed a 'traffic jam' moving from Russia to the Ukrainian border. That turned out to be the Russian army. The movement could already be observed hours before Russian president Putin announced the attack. |
