The Chinese government is targeting social media accounts and websites that "willfully misrepresent" the Chinese market and national economic policies. The platforms must remove critical government content. With the campaign, the Chinese government wants to create an online environment that "promotes sustainable and healthy development of China's economy and society". Commercial platforms that share foreign coverage or commentaries that "put the Chinese economy in a bad light" are also being addressed, says Chinese internet watchdog CAC. The "cleaning" of critical sites is done under the supervision of the Cac, the Chinese Ministry of finance, the Central Bank and various financial regulators. Chinese social media services, such as Weibo and WeChat, are expected to close off infringing accounts and ban rule breakers. The mentioned services and other tech companies, such as Tencent and Bytedance, have said that they will comply with the rules. |
